8BitDo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller – A Good Choice if Switch is your Thing

The 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller is a budget-friendly controller designed for gamers seeking a fully-featured experience on Nintendo Switch. This is the controller many Nintendo fans have been waiting for since the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller dropped without Nintendo Switch compatibility.

Design and Build Quality

The 8BitDo Ultimate 2C boasts a sturdy, ergonomic design that fits comfortably in the hands, with a similar shape to many of their other controllers. While this is comfortable, it has a more squared off shape than something like the Mobapad N1 HD, which gives it a slightly more rigid holding position that I suspect could be an issue for those with smaller hands. However, the controller fits well overall, with well-spaced buttons and joysticks that offer precise control. The enhanced grip provides a secure hold, even during intense gaming sessions.

Connectivity and Compatibility

Unlike the original Ultimate 2C Wireless, this model is Bluetooth only. It seamlessly pairs with the Nintendo Switch with no issues, and with the addition of sixaxis motion controls, this is a great choice for Switch. However, that’s where compatibility ends. We tested the controller with Windows and had mixed results. With no official compatibility with Windows, gaming on the PC with this controller does not work out of the box. You can still connect the controller, and it does work with Steam input active, but we’d recommend looking elsewhere if you’re looking for a controller with versatile connectivity.

Performance and Responsiveness

Testing the controller across various games, including fast-paced titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Celeste, revealed responsive and accurate controls. The D-Pad has a clicky tactile feel, and the analog sticks perform with exceptional accuracy thanks to the hall effect, providing the precision needed for competitive gaming. The controller’s responsiveness is consistent, ensuring a seamless gaming experience.

Battery Life

With a rechargeable 480mAh Li-on battery, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C offers an impressive 15 hours of playtime on a single charge. This longevity makes it a reliable choice for extended gaming sessions without frequent recharging. The USB-C charging port supports quick charging, adding to the controller’s convenience.

Additional Features

The controller includes extra bumpers (R4 and L4) and non-linear digital triggers, which are designed for personalized configuration to help gamers react faster in games. No software is needed for this feature. The refined D-Pad and bumpers provide a clicky but smooth feel, while the wear-resistant metal joystick rings enhance the overall durability of the controller. Fast button mapping, 6-axis motion control, rumble vibration, and turbo function are also notable features for this controller, making it a pretty impressive piece of kit for the price.

Price and Value

Priced around £30, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth is an excellent value controller for its feature set. When compared to alternatives in the budget controller market, it offers a comprehensive set of features and a premium gaming experience that rivals the more expensive first-party options.

Pros and Cons

ProsCons
• Excellent value for the price and features you get – rumble, sixaxis motion, and turbo mode to name a few.• Compatibility is confined to Nintendo Switch only
• Comfortable to hold despite not being the most ergonomic shape overall• The form is slightly less ergonomic than some other controllers
• Impressive battery life with quick charging• Lower build quality / loose buttons contrast with an otherwise fairly robust controller
• Tactile d-pad and hall effect sticks – what’s not to like here No 2.4G option for faster response times

Score: 4.2/5

Conclusion

The 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller is an excellent choice for gamers seeking a budget-friendly, feature-rich peripheral for Switch gaming. Its robust design, excellent feature set, and long battery life make it a worthwhile investment for only £30. While it may lack compatibility and has a slightly lower build quality, the overall package justifies the cost for anyone looking for a budget pro controller for Switch. For those looking for a controller to use across different platforms, there are other options out there that will work better.
